We have often been asked to provide extra large plastic NEMA/IP rated enclosures and so we are delighted to introduce the NBG series. While much is made of the ongoing reduction in component sizes, one concept that is overlooked is that now products that used to require a many bay cabinet can now be housed in a single large unit. Moreover, when large enclosures are required, designers often think that metal is their only option. Large plastic boxes require a significant investment in both equipment and tooling, exponentially greater than that required for a smaller enclosure. However, the reduction in weight as well as the impact resistance and flexibility of plastic can make the shift in material the best option. The NBG series is made from PC+PBT(f1) material offering high strength and weather resistance and is, of course rated NEMA 4x and IP66.
Available in three sizes up to 39.5 x 27.5 x 12.3”, it comes with many helpful features including an easily removable door to assist in installation of your component. It comes with either an opaque or clear door and the hinges are made of stainless steel. The material is UV stabilized and it uses a poured gasket in the door to insure the best possible seal. This allows it to meet NEMA 4x, 12, and 13 as well as IP66 ratings. We already have customers in a variety of industries for this product from Industrial Automation to Agriculture to IoT.
One of the questions we get asked most often is how do NEMA and IP ratings compare. That is, can one find an enclosure with a NEMA rating and use it to fit a required IP rating? The quick answer is no as there are different types of tests and even different testing bodies who set these ratings. However, if your purpose is to just determine which NEMA is closest to a specific IP rating and vice versa, there are similarities. First, some definitions. Electrical enclosures are rated based on their ability to withstand a varying degree of environmental elements, including dust, water, and ice. In the United States, the National Electrical Manufacturers Association developed the NEMA rating for classifying an enclosure’s level of protection from those environmental elements. The International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) http://www.iec.ch/index.htm has developed an alternative rating system, the IP standard, which stands for Ingress Protection. The standard format is “IP’ followed by two numbers which designate the level of protection. The first digit, which ranges from 1-6, specifies the level of protection from solids, and the second digit, which ranges from 1-8, specifies the level of protection from water. The higher the number is, the greater the level of protection. For instance, an enclosure with a rating of IP10 would offer less protection than an enclosure that is rated at IP54.

One of the most consistent questions that Bud Industries receives deals with the best materials for a NEMA or IP rated enclosure. Bud provides Nema and IP rated boxes in almost every material including steel, stainless steel, abs plastic, polycarbonate, fiberglass and die cast aluminum. In the last few years, we have added an interesting combination of polycarbonate and fiberglass (10%) that is becoming increasingly popular for many good reasons. This combination offers many advantages over both polycarbonate and traditional fiberglass materials when utilized for electronic enclosures.
Fiberglass is typically stronger than polycarbonate but because of the glass fibers it can crack upon impact. Polycarbonate is much less likely to crack. By adding a relatively small amount of glass fibers, the enclosure gains significant strength but still is basically crack resistant. This makes this product especially useful in a factory or other environment where the box may be more likely to receive impacts from other materials or equipment.
Bud is all about making the customer’s life easy and our new PTK Molded knockout box is the perfect example. These NEMA/IP rated enclosures come with pre-molded knockouts to make field installation of equipment or modifications quickly and cost effectively. While Bud is always happy to install holes or slots in our standard enclosures, in an industry leading 5 days, being able to use existing knockouts is the most rapid and cost effective approach. These are not the typical flimsy knockouts that one finds in many competitive situations but rather strongly molded so that there is no risk of accidentally dislodging the covers.
Nowhere is a picture better at telling a story than in describing Bud’s IP and NEMA plastic Boxes. Even better is a video and we have just updated our videos on the popular NBF and PN series boxes. While in the prior version, we just described the product features, in this version, we show each box being hit with a powerful water spray. While this is not an official UL test, it replicates a bit of the process that UL went through to certify these to the NEMA 4x standard. It is also similar to the test that TUV performed to certify their IP66 and IP65 ratings respectively

The PTQ series of plastic IP and NEMA rated electronic enclosure is one of Bud’s newest and most durable product lines. In fact, if you check out the video, you can even see how it holds up when a car drives over it. While that is not something that we recommend in daily use, the thinking is that if it can withstand that external pressure and weight, then it should provide superior protection for any electronic components. The secret to its strength is a unique blend of polycarbonate and glass fibers. With 10% fiber resin, it has the benefit of the flexibility and strength of polycarbonate with the added strength of the glass fibers. If there is much more than 10% fiber, then the enclosure is more susceptible to cracking or shattering if hit. They are UL508 NEMA 4x, and what makes these even more impressive is that they are rated at IP67 which means they can even be submerged for short amounts of time making them ideal for almost any application whether inside or out.
As 2015 wraps to a close, it has to go into the record books as one of the most unusual. From politics (remember that Scott Walker was the favorite for the Republican nod early in the year) to the weather (remember the Polar Vortex as now the East Coast is basking in record heat?), nothing seemed to go as projected. Therefore, it is with pride that we note that Bud continues to be as consistent as ever. As we celebrated our 87th year in business, we have bucked the trend with double digit growth and increased market share. Why do we think this happened? There have been a number of good reasons:
- We have had an aggressive new product introduction program this year. From many new sizes and styles of NEMA 4x plastic boxes to high end extruded pc enclosures, from snap together utility boxes to explosion proof boxes we have led the market in pushing into new industries and broadening our base
- We have upgraded some of our best sellers. A great example is our AN die cast NEMA enclosure which are now rated IP68, suitable for submerging for extended periods of time.
- We continue to lead the industry in our modification capabilities and lead time. Our five day turnaround on most modified boxes helps us serve the customer as quickly as their local job shop with higher quality and more consistency. On all significant quotations, we booked more than 1/3, which includes many that did not get funded

Between the new discoveries of water movement on Mars, and the Matt Damon movie, the Maritan, space and space travel is in the news. It is probably little known that Bud Industries played a small but important role in early space flight. For those old enough to remember, the astronauts carried with them a large metal box, its use was classified and we never learned exactly what it did. We thought it might have to do with generating oxygen or temperature controls for the space suit. Bud manufactured these boxes to their exacting standards and did so for nearly a decade until they were no longer required. In the intervening years, Bud has provided NASA products for a variety of applications, mostly involved in research and testing.
Today, Bud quality is internationally known particularly for products that protect components in harsh environments. While we have not tested our products on Mars, we have tested them under a variety of extreme weather conditions. One of our customers for our PN series of NEMA and IP rated plastic boxes deploys them in the Arctic Circle as part of a monitoring system. Having to deal with not only the extreme temperatures, but also moisture and wind create a challenge that we have successful met for years. Their boxes have worked flawlessly and the only modification has been that we have sent them updated gaskets as they have evolved to insure that they have the best possible product.
